Young people in Sankt Gallen say restrictions are damaging future

After the recent riots in Sankt Gallen, young political leaders have written an open letter to the Federal Council.

This letter demands that their concerns are listened to.

Leaders from the youth groups of many of the major parties have joined forces saying the restrictions are damaging their future.

Unemployment has risen by 43% amongst those aged between 15 and 24 in the past year. The main reason is that recent graduates are unable to find a job and those seeking an apprenticeship fear their opportunities will be lost.

A study by the University of Basel shows the level of depression is up 3%, but organisations designed to help those in crisis says calls are up significantly - and a quarter of calls are from the young with suicidal thoughts.

Not being able to socialise with their peers is seen as one of the main problems. Youth worker, Nicole Joerg-Ratter, says the young are more dependent on public spaces as a meeting place, an option closed to many of them at the moment.
