Young cyclist seriously injured in Zurich championships

The Swiss Under 19 cyclist, Muriel Furrer, has been very seriously injured after an accident at the Cycling Road World Championships in Zurich.

Organisers say the 18-year-old suffered a serious head injury after a fall and was airlifted to hospital where she’s in a critical condition. 

Full details of the accident are not available, but she was competing on the City Circuit when she crashed in a forested area. The track was very wet at the time. 

Furrer competes in the cross-country and cyclocross. At the European Mountain Bike Championships in May in Romania, she won bronze in the team relay.

Organizers of the championship have yet to decide on the how the races will continue. A scheduled media conference for this morning has been cancelled.
