Voters will make final decision on solar policy

The Geneva Green Liberal Party is refusing to drop its initiative about solar panel, despite a counter proposal from the canton. They don’t believe it goes far enough.

So, voters will be left to make the final decision.

The initiative would oblige property owners to install solar panels by 2035 – but the counter proposal limits the installation only for new buildings or after a major renovation.

Backers of the original initiative say the people strongly back solar power.

They also point out that as most people in Geneva rent their property, the installation will be carried out by the owners – which are mainly investment funds or the state.

The vote will be in May.
