The Vernets ice rink in Geneva is going to be renovated after the city agreed to pay CHF 29m.
Several improvements are planned, including a new freezing system which will be more efficient and use far less ammonia required for cooling.
Solar panels will be installed on the roof, which will supply 13% of the sports centre needs.
Inside, the VIP section will be enlarged as will the changing rooms – which is a request from the Swiss Hockey Federation.
Work will start next year and last for around two years. It will not disrupt the season.
But Geneva Servette Hockey will only have a limited time to use the new facilities – it’s planned the club will move to new premises in Lancy in 2028.
Geneva mayor, Marie Barbey-Chpuis, says the new facilities are being designed for use after the club’s departure.
