UN workers plan demonstration

UN workers are planning an unprecedented demonstration on Thursday – May 1st, international labour day.

UN unions say they work to protect the most vulnerable in the world – and that work is now under threat.

Many agencies, including the ILO, UNICEF, the World Food Programme, the UNHCR and UNAIDS are all looking at job cuts between 20 and 30 percent.

International Civil Servants plan to protest on the Place des Nations on Thursday to denounce the number of job and budget cuts.

The head of the association, Public Service International, Daniel Bertossa says weakening the UN workforce means jeopardizing international peace and security in an increasingly unstable world.
