Thurgau to hike littering fines

Dropping litter in canton Thurgau is about to get very expensive.

The cantonal government want to do more to tackle the problem and believe the current fine of CHF 50 is just too low.

The minimum fine will be raised to CHF 150, but could go as high as CHF 300 for major offences.

Some councillors questioned if it may be more effective to spend more on educating people about the dangers of littering, especially emptying ashtrays irresponsibly as cigarette butts can poison groundwater.
