Teen girls need more help with anxiety and depression

Young women between the ages of 11 and 18 are increasingly seeking medical help with psychological problems such as anxiety and depression.

That’s according to a report by Santésuisse, the industry organisation of Swiss health insurance companies.

The report, based on data from 2021, says that the care and management of psychological problems accounts for 20 per cent of health expenditure among young women aged 11 to 18, a trend that has been constantly increasing in recent years.

Among boys of the same age, health costs for similar problems have remained stable at around 14%.

A doctor quoted in the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper suggests that psychological problems are rarely detected in young men as they often deal with such problems differently to young women, for example by becoming aggressive to hide their feelings.

In response to the report, the Federal Office of Public Health says that it is aware of the increased psychiatric needs of girls and young women and has promised a report and proposals for measures to deal with the problem at the end of the year.
