Switzerland needs more electricity

A report from the Electricity Commission says this country needs to generate more of its own power so not to rely on imports.

The commission says there’s no immediate risk. But Switzerland, and other European countries, are phasing out nuclear power.

There are plans to boost hydroelectric power – but experts say it won’t be enough. Switzerland needs to have a target not to import more than 10 TWh to maintain energy security.

The collapse of the talks with the EU is also adding to concerns as it may be blocked from the European electricity market.
