The president Ignazio Cassis says its highly likely the Federal Council will match the sanctions against Russia announced by the EU.
Switzerland is under pressure from other countries and the people to do more.
In a television interview yesterday, Cassis says the government could freeze Russian assets and could also target Vladimir Putin directly.
There are several MPs from centrist and left-wing parties that would like Switzerland to do more. The US embassy in Bern says it encourages Switzerland to join the international effort to isolate Russia and the EU ambassador in Bern hopes this country will show the ‘courage and determination’ and support EU sanctions.
Some are concerned that if Switzerland does fully implement sanctions, it could harm the country’s neutral position and its ability to provide good offices for mediation.
