Swiss universities hunt for aliens

Swiss researchers will be at the forefront of the search for alien life with a new detector.

The Universities of Bern and Geneva will design a spectrograph which will be installed on the European Southern Observatory currently being built in Chile.

The machine will cost EUR 120m.

The University of Geneva says the new detector will be able to determine the chemical composition of the atmosphere of distant planets – which may give signs of life.

It’ll be fully operational by 2032.
