Media outlets in Switzerland could be exempted from some parts of the banking secrecy law if the publication of stories is said to be in the public interest.
Currently it’s illegal for media to publish leaked bank data – even if the story is being carried by foreign outlets.
The ban is being criticised by international organisations, such as Reporters Without Frontiers and even the United Nations.
Some Swiss parliamentarians are also concerned about the lack of press freedom.
A House of Representatives Commission is putting forward a motion to allow the publication of banking details if it’s deemed to be in ‘good faith’.
The government is broadly welcoming the proposals – but it still has to be debated in the Senate.
