Swiss and Italian prosecutors are working together to fight mafia activity.

Speaking to the NZZ newspaper, Italy’s top mafia prosecutor, Giovanni Melillo, says the criminal organisations are active north of the Alps.

He praised international cooperation after the recent arrest of the Cosa Nostra boss, Matteo Messina Denaro.

He says there’s evidence of violence being carried out by mafia members who live in Switzerland.

Previously the head of the Federal Police Office in Bern, Nicoletta della Valle, has said that all mafia organisations are present in this country.

She says they’re particularly active in the construction and restaurant sectors.
