The Tribune de Genève is warning of another telephone scam, and instead of snaring the elderly and the less tech savvy – this is catching out IT experts and young professionals, according to the paper.
It starts simply enough with an SMS from a supposedly courier company saying they need to pay a small fee for customs for their package.
This is likely to be taken seriously if you’re expecting something.
Once the small fee is paid by credit card, then a representative from the company calls you to ask if you’d made a mistake by transferring a large amount.
The victim thinks they may have mistyped and in trying to rectify the issue, divulge more personal information which can be used to hack a credit card or bank account.
The Post Office points out you never will be asked to pay a customs fee by SMS.
