The Senate has thrown out a proposal to allow the government to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.
The move was rejected by parties on both the political left and right.
They argued a move would undermine neutrality and hinder any efforts of Switzerland to mediate in the conflict.
There are other proposals in parliament to allow weapons exports. A motion being put to the lower house today would authorize exports if the United Nations says international law had been broken.
This country is under international pressure to permit Swiss made munitions to be exported to Ukraine.
