Senate backs fuel comparison site

An online fuel price comparison site has taken a step towards becoming a reality after the Senate passed a motion calling for one to be set up.

The government doesn’t want one – as it fails to see the benefit.

A system is already running in Austria, service stions are obligated to put their prices on the site every day – the idea is motorists can shop around to find the cheapest deals and the transparency would encourage prices to fall.

But the Federal Council is sceptical. They believe it would be complicated to set up and for a driver who travels around 12,000 km a year, it would only save around CHF 200 in that time.

The lower house still needs to vote on the issue.
