Homeowners in canton Solothurn are being told they can’t have a rock garden - and a nationwide ban is being discussed.
Many say its an encroachment of their rights – and the more elderly say a rock garden is easier to maintain.
Some locals told the Blick newspaper that they should be able to do what they want with their gardens.
But the canton argues that rock gardens harm biodiversity as they damage the soil, especially if there’s a layer of plastic underneath.
Some local communes across the country have already banned them – but Solothurn is the first cantonal ban.
It could spread. The Federal Council favours a ban – but that needs to be backed by parliament.
