Quagga invasion is an emergency

Quagga mussel

The invasion of the quagga mussel in Swiss waterways needs to be treated as an emergency – say experts.

Switzerland also needs to work with neighbouring countries to eliminate the pest.

The Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science says the quagga mussel is affecting ecosystems and clogging water pipes.

It’s native to the Black Sea and has been spreading rapidly here for the last 10 years.

Native fish are now struggling to find enough to eat due to the voracious appetite of the new comer, say the scientists.
