People now back nuclear power

A new survey suggests public opinion towards nuclear power has changed dramatically.

Following the disaster at the power station in Fukushima in Japan in 2011 – people across Europe wanted out of nuclear power.

But now, only seven years after a vote confirming the people wanted to close all atomic power stations – the mood has changed.

The survey, by the media company Tamedia, shows 53% now support building new plants – and those in favour are quite strongly pro-nuclear power.

The survey takers assume the current geopolitical situation has driven the change - leading to a desire for independent energy sources after the Ukraine invasion.
