Passport office in catch-up after lockdown

The Swiss passport office is as busy as it’s ever been as many had delayed renewing their travel documents during the pandemic.

Most cantons say they have a much higher demand than ever before – the longest wait is Geneva, which is six weeks. But it’s common to have to wait for more than a month.

There’s a similar delay for ID cards.

The Geneva office says it seems many people didn’t think it was worthwhile renewing a passport during lockdown as they could not use it – so there’s now a catch up.

Authorities are recommending to allow at least two months before needing a passport to apply to for a new one.
