Fans of the sport Padel swill have more courts they can play on in Geneva.
The commune of Meryin has agreed to spend CHF 3m on three new courts.
Padel is becoming more and more common. It’s similar to tennis, but played with sold rackets and the balls can bounce off the walls, like squash.
There are around 2,000 players in Geneva, according to the Geneva Padel Association.
The new courts will be covered and will have solar panels on the roof. Two tennis courts will go to make space at the Maisonnex sports centre near CERN.
The new courts will be built in such a way they can be dismantled. That’s because the land actually belongs to the Confederation – although there’s a lease until 2043, CERN has the right to claim to the land if it needs it.
