The number of cash machines in the country is decreasing – but the reduction isn’t uniform.
Fewer people are using cash, preferring contactless cards or payment apps.
The cantonal banks run the largest networks. The Vaud cantonal bank says it’s cut back some little used machines. But the Valais bank says the number it operates is stable.
Running the machines is expensive – one estimate is that it costs CHF 30,000 per machine per year.
There’s also the problem of the machines being attacked – 25 last year, mainly near the border.
Figures from the Swiss National Bank show that 1,000 machines have disappeared in the last 5 years.
But one idea to cut the costs for the banks is that the machines should be run centrally. It’s being pushed by the Post Office.
