Nuclear power splits Bern

The possibility of new nuclear energy plants in Switzerland is causing a heated debate in Bern.

Backers of an initiative ‘Stop Blackouts’ have collected enough signature to hand over the question to voters.

Correspondents say the Federal Council is split – the right-wing is in favour, but the Centre Party and left wingers are against.

Detractors say it will take too long to build new atomic plants and now is the time to invest in renewable energy.
