Not unlawful to warn of ticket checks

It’s not illegal to warn public transport users of impending ticket controls.

The issue is being discussed as a Facebook group in Lausanne has hit 30,000 users.

It updates in real-time where the ticket inspectors are, so allowing riders to get off a bus or the metro ahead of a check.

Unlike warning of speed cameras, there’s no specific law banning the practice. As the issue has never been taken to court, there’s also no prior rulings to give guidance.

But public transport authorities in Lausanne are seemingly relaxed. They point out that 30,000 is a small amount compared to the 300,000 that use the service every day.
