Despite having the right to vote in Geneva – many foreigners don’t use the opportunity, according to a study by the University of Geneva.

Foreigners who’ve lived in Geneva for eight years can vote in communal matters and have been able to for the last 13 years.

But there is a serious gap between nationalities. The lowest participating group is the Portuguese, only 13% exercise their right. The next lowest is the Spanish at 17%.

27% of American citizens vote – and 31% of Brits.

For reference, 40% of Swiss nationals vote.

You’d expect the locals to make the most of their right – but no. That’s the Belgians. 41% make sure their voice is heard on local issues.
