New nuclear plant possible in canton Bern

The Federal Councillor for Energy, Albert Rösti, says he could imagine a new nuclear power plant being built at the site of the existing one at Mühleberg in canton Bern.

The government said last week it was in favour of new atomic plants, despite a popular vote in 2017 calling for a gradual phase out.

Rösti says the advantage of expanding Mühleberg is that it’s unlikely that it will be opposed locally as many jobs already depend on it.

Some objections are expected from the German region Baden-Württemberg – but Rösti points out that Germany was dependent on Swiss produced electricity three times last winter – so a new plant is in the European interest.
