Major e-sport comp in Geneva cancelled due to abortion comment

BDS - Geneva e-sport team

It was supposed to be one of the biggest international e-sport tournaments in the country – but now it’s been cancelled because of a controversial abortion comment.

This Saturday, the Geneva e-sports team BDS was to welcome several of the best teams in the world for the Rocket League ‘Take the Throne’ competition.

The Geneva team, BDS, has won the championship twice – in 2022 and in September this year.

But the tournament, due to be held at the Batiment des Forces Motrices this weekend, has been called off after the team’s head, Patrice Bailo De Spoelberch, send out a message on ‘X’ saying that any woman who has an abortion should lose the right to have children.

The message triggered a wave of indignation on social media and several other teams decided not to compete.

The Geneva team BDS, says his comments do not reflect the values of the wider team.
