Investigation into Hamas funding

Authorities are investigating if money has been transferred from Switzerland to Hamas.

The probe pre-dates the Hamas attack on Israel, according to the Federal Attorney General, Stefan Blättler.

The investigation is made more difficult as Hamas has not been classed as a terrorist group by the government. If it had been, the process would be easier. 

Bern says it is examining if Hamas should be. Switzerland does consider ISIS and Al-Qaeda terrorists. 

Despite the lack of an official labelling of terrorist – the prosecutor does believe a conviction is possible. 

But he also laments lack of staff at the Federal Police Office which is also hampering the investigation.
