'Humusation' raises legal questions

More are exploring the possibility of becoming compost after their death, but it’s proving to be a legal quagmire.

The process is called ‘humusation.’ It involves burying the body 2 meters deep in wood shavings and allowing it to decompose naturally.

Currently it’s illegal in Switzerland, but cantons Vaud, Geneva and Zurich are taking a close interest.

But the Federal Council is not interested. A Green National Councillor, Christophe Clivaz, put forward a proposal for national rule, but it was rejected.

The government says it’s a cantonal responsibility.

Those cantons that are considering it are searching for suitable land before making a final decision.
