Hopes Nemo win will advance gender issues

Equality campaigners are hopeful that the win by non-binary Nemo in the Eurovision Song Contest will push the debate for the inclusion of a third gender in Swiss law.

Sandro Niederer of the Swiss Transgender Network told Swiss German radio that thousands of non-binary people face discrimination, but he hopes Nemo’s win will show that their cause is being heard.

Nemo arrived back in the country at Zurich airport yesterday. They were greeted by fans and then that turned into a march for the rights of non-binary people.

There’s still a fight ahead. The federal government remains opposed to a third gender as they say it would require major change to laws and the constitution.

They say that gender equality remains deeply anchored in Swiss society.
