Geothermal project gets go-ahead

Canton Jura is giving the green light to a geothermal project, despite public misgivings.

The drilling is taking place in the Haute-Sorne area near the cantonal capital of Délemont.

The canton says there needs to be more information and the company has to be more transparent, but it says the exploration is important as it could lead to a supply of renewable energy – enough to power 6,000 homes.

But it is surrounded by controversy. In 2014 two similar projects were stopped around Sankt Gallen and Basel following earth tremors which many believe was triggered by the drilling.
