Geneva voters reject foreigner votes, but yes to hate image ban

Geneva voters had a series of important decisions. The idea to give foreigners the vote and the right to stand in elections has been clearly rejected, by 61%.

Many commentators suggest that the ‘One Life Here, One Voice Here’ was too much for voters, as it included the right to stand in elections. If it had been just the right to vote for those who have lived in Switzerland for more than 8 years – the result may have been different, suggest many.

Unsurprisingly, the new constitutional amendment to ban hate symbols – such as the Swastika – passed by nearly 85%.

The exhibition and wearing of hate symbols will be made illegal – with some exceptions for educational purposes.

Voters also threw out a proposed change on how child care works in the canton. The idea was to abandon the current system of collective worker rights in favour of the minimum wage law. Backers hoped it would lead to new creches being set up. – but others say it would have led to a fall in standards.

But in Carouge, communal voters have given the go ahead to a new aquatic centre at a cost of more than CHF 74m.
