A new footbridge running next to the Pont du Mont Blanc in Geneva has taken another step closer.
The idea has been in the works for the last 10 years. Earlier this month a test was carried out by the lake boat captains to make sure the ships could still turn in the reduced space if the bridge was built.
The results were positive.
The tests were needed as the architects of the bridge, who won the right to design it after a competition, admitted they had not thought about the needs of the lake boats.
The new bridge means the space for cycle lanes can be expanded on the existing crossing.
But now the future of the project rests on the costs. It was initially budgeted for CHF 12m. But now the costs are projected to be between 20 and 40 million.
It will now go to a vote at the city council at the end of the summer. It’s thought the members will balk at the cost.
