Geneva anger over roads plan

Following the publication of the government’s road plans – there’s anger from some Geneva politicians that the region seems to find itself at the end of the queue.

National parliamentarians Céline Amaudruz from the Swiss people’s Party and Liberal Party MP, Christian Lüscher both blame the Geneva government for not pushing the region’s case hard enough and focussing too much on public transport policies.

Road improvement projects are set to start in German speaking regions immediately. But the first work in Geneva, set to widen the autoroute around the airport, won’t start until 2026 and then other projects until 2030.

But the Federal Roads Office does recognise the needs of the region. It’s predicting that by 2040 all roads around the Geneva region will experience long lasting traffic jams.

It says part of the problem is the nature of the area with dispersed housing outside the city centres.
