French town invests 1,000s to stop fly tipping

Hôtel de Ville, Gex

The town of Gex, in neighbouring France has invested more than EUR 100,000 in high tech cameras designed only to stop the scourge of fly tipping.

The cameras have been strategically placed in areas which suffer from the problem the most.

They’re triggered by artificial intelligence when its thought someone may be offending.

The police say they’re detailed enough to read vehicle licence plates and recognise faces.

The problem is getting worse as residents have to pay for waste disposal and local dumps demand badges to prove users are locals. It’s also thought Swiss residents are partly to blame.

Fines are heavy. They start at EUR 500 – but could reach EUR 14,000.
