A proposed large-scale artificial snow-making project to make up for the lack of snow in two ski resorts in the canton of Vaud has been met with strong opposition from environmentalists.
They say that the project is an ecological disaster that will damage the landscape and biodiversity, and is too heavy a price to pay to support tourism in low altitude resorts that no longer have a future.
Poor snowfall in recent winters has led to shorter ski seasons in the region. Last winter, the season in Les Mosses lasted for just 30 days. If the project gets the go-ahead, more than 170 snow cannons will be in operation in Leysin and Les Mosses from 2026, fuelled by water pumped from Lake Hongrin. Authorities say that the project is a matter of survival for the local economy.
Opponents have until August the 6th, when consultation on the proposal ends, to drum up support against the project. They are organising a hike in the area to encourage local people to join the opposition.
