Duty free limits to be halved in January

(c) Federal Office of Customs and Border Security

The value of goods you can bring into the country will be halved from January.

Currently CHF 300 is the limit, but that will be CHF 150.

Parliament decided on the change, despite the federal council being opposed.

It’s hoped the move will help to cut shopping tourism which Swiss retailers claim is hugely damaging to them.

The government is concerned the new limit will add to the workload of border guards.

Only goods that are subject to the 8.1% VAT rate will be included in the limit.
