There’s a shortage of doctors, pediatricians and child psychiatrists in Geneva.
The state councillor, Pierre Maudet, says he will lift the current requirement that anyone in those professions must prove a need before being allowed to open their own surgery.
The canton controls the number of medical professionals in the city that can bill insurance companies. But medical associations have been warning demand is high.
Maudet says he wants to be in a situation people will be able to get to see a doctor without an appointment – which should also lift the pressure on hospital emergency rooms.
There are also plans to open a new emergency phone line next year to help people find local doctors more easily.
