Daily drinking down, binge drinking up

Alcohol consumption is dropping – but binge drinking is up.

Figures from the Federal Statistics Office show that the vast majority of the population does drink – 83%.

More than half has a drink at least once a week, but the daily rate is dramatically down from 1992. From 30% to 12% today.

But occasional drunkenness is up – defined as more than 4 drinks for women and 5 for men. Up 5% for women and 3% for men.

This is a trend followed by mainly adolescents and young adults.

Wine is the most popular drink – half of the population have a glass at least once a week, beer follows with 38%.
