A Geneva court has thrown out an appeal against the new vehicle tax levied by Geneva which caused shock and surprise at the beginning of the year when many saw their tax bills soar.
It rejected arguments that the people were not sufficiently informed ahead of the vote which confirmed the new tax regime. Judges say there was enough detail in the voters’ material for an informed decision.
Despite the court ruling, the canton has brought in temporary relief measure for those who saw their bills rise heavily – there’s now a cap which says the rate cannot be more than double the previous levels.
But the claimants say they will now take the case to the Federal Court.
