There could be a general easing of Covid restrictions on the way after the cantons reported back to the federal government.
While not all cantons agreed on everything. It’s clear there’s a strong feeling that life needs to get easier and people need to be freer.
One of the first rules that may go will be the need to show a negative test result for entering Switzerland. Many cantons, especially those that rely on tourism, want the measure gone.
Cantons Valais and Fribourg say there’s little point testing people coming into the country when Omicron is so widespread already. It’s possible that requirement will be gone by the end of the week.
While the vaccination passes are likely to stay for a while yet – the controversial 2G plus requirements may go and return to the 3G rule – which means you have to be vaccinated, recovered, or have a negative test.
Canton Jura complains the rules have become too difficult to understand – especially as there are differences in Switzerland compared to the rest of Europe. Neuchatel and Valais say this country should simply follow the EU.
There is a broader agreement that some quarantine rules need to stay for a while yet. Canton Vaud calls the ending of isolation premature at this stage.
The government will meet to discuss the next stages tomorrow.
