The Geneva Grand Council has accepted a petition to examine the safety of the Route de Lausanne.

Campaigners have been calling for a change since July last year when a cyclist called Christina was killed by a driver who was illegally racing on the road at over 100 kph.

The petition, which has been signed by more than 6,000 people, demands the layout of the road is changed. They want the speed limit to be lowered, cycling lanes to be widened – without compromising space for pedestrians.

Some councillors voted against the petition, saying police don’t consider the road to be particularly accident prone.
