Bluetongue disease is spreading through bison in Switzerland.
At a breeding station in canton Vaud, several animals have become infected and one has died.
There are regular outbreaks in Switzerland, and breeders say herds remain vulnerable.
The animals are European Bison which were brought back from the brink of extinction around 100 years ago when 12 individuals were bred.
The species is different from its North American cousins. They’re slimmer and have longer legs. But they can weigh close to a tonne.
The disease is spread by insects and can also affect cattle and horses – but it’s harmless to humans.
