Blue tongue disease hits farms

Blue tongue disease is spreading rapidly in some parts of the country – so far, in canton Aargau alone, 300 farms have been hit.

The disease is not dangerous for humans, but mainly affects cattle. Sheep are also impacted.

The cantonal Department of Health says it paid out CHF 140,000 to farmer in compensation.

Once the disease strikes, farms are unable to move or sell their stock. It’s spread by mosquitos which are becoming more active as the weather warms.
