Beer drinking is down across the country and a new trend is rising.
Switzerland has one of the highest rates of breweries per head of population in the world, due to the rise of the micro-brewery. There are around 1,200 according to the Swiss Brewery Association. On average we drink 52 litres a year each.
But it’s expected figures will show a downturn for the 2020/2021 season – and it’s not all Covid related.
Although 1 in five beers are normally drunk in a bar -and that number will be down because of lockdowns, the brewing association says the poor weather over the summer will also have a significant impact.
There were hopes the solid performance of Switzerland in the Euro championships would boost sales, but that failed to materialize.
But a new trend may bring new customers. Sales of non-alcoholic beer are climbing. New techniques and flavours are being credited for the 15% rise last year.
