The government is considering lowering the speed limit on some sections of the autoroute network to 60 kph.
Analysis shows a lower speed limit cuts down on jams and accidents – meaning you actually may get to your destination by slowing down rather than driving fast.
The Federal Roads Office is said to be looking at the figures and is due to make a recommendation soon.
Cutting jams could also save CHF 2bn in lost time. Last year there were 32,000 hours of jams.
At the same time as possibly cutting limits on the main roads – the minimum one-year sentence for serious speeders has also been removed after widespread criticism.
Courts will be able to take into consideration past driving records and if the driver has a ‘respectable reason’ for driving too fast.
