Campaigners say the idea is excessive, outdated and overpriced.
The plans to spend CHF 5.3bn have been passed by both houses of parliament.
72,000 signatures have already been collected – 50,000 are needed – and there’s still 6 weeks to go until the deadline.
If voters kill the bill, it will also impact the already announced new lanes on the A1 between Geneva and Lausanne.
If the signatures are verified, the vote will be held next year.
