A third of Swiss people don’t want fireworks on 1 August

For half of Swiss people surveyed, the 1 August fireworks are an integral part of the Swiss National Day festivities. However a third of the population do not want fireworks at all on that day, citing pollution, stress to animals or risk of injury as their reasoning.

There’s also a divide between the French and German speaking parts of the country: 70% of the French-speaking population are in favour of fireworks, and only 43% in the German-speaking parts.

A majority of Swiss people are against individual fireworks, but younger people are more likely to support private fireworks. One in five people plan to light their own fireworks on 1 August.
