2022 set to be another bad year for Geneva farmers

Geneva farmers are preparing themselves for a tough year ahead with several uncertainties making life difficult for the sector.

It comes on the back of last year which saw harvests being cut due to the wet summer. The association, AgriGenève says nearly 2,000 tonnes of cereal was lost in the canton.

Now the impact of the war in Ukraine and Covid is causing disruption in supplies, as well as cost increases.

The rise in fuel prices means it’s more expensive to heat greenhouses – which has been necessary after a cold snap.

Adding to the pain is the strength of the franc -making exports more expensive and more efficient for shoppers to buy groceries in neighbouring France, hitting domestic sales.
