Last year was the worst for glaciers in Switzerland since records began.
They lost more ice in 2022 than ever before. 6% of the total mass disappeared – or three cubic kilometres of water.
And the way this year is going – it could be worse.
Glaciologist, David Volken, told the Blick newspaper that June was the fifth warmest since records began – which is bad news for glaciers.
Meanwhile, a report for the University of Bern suggests warmer temperatures are responsible for a higher summer death rate.
As many as 60% of heat deaths last summer could be due to climate change. The most affected areas are cities.
It was over 30 degrees in Geneva for 41 days last year.
Last summer 623 people died due to heat across the country - that’s more than 3% of all deaths.
