The plants that Switzerland banned

There are a number of plants, including laurel, windmill palm and Virginia creeper, that have found themselves officially banned in Switzerland. Two recently released lists have divided these plants into one of two categories; the first is those that you can’t buy, sell, plant, or transport (including transporting prunings to the dechetterie! Be careful.) The second list is marginally less strict and allows for upkeep of plants in domestic gardens. It includes Montreux's iconic palms.

Hester Macdonald has some tips for replacing some of these invasive species if you find them in your gardens, and Mr Min Hahn from the Federal Office of the Environment explains the classifications and whether more are expected to be added to the list in the future.
